Blockchain Project: BMW NFT & Metaverse Program
In October 2020, BMW launched a token-based rewards program in South Korea: the program, called BMW Points, was created as a blockchain-driven scheme for customers to earn redeemable rewards tokens through games, purchases, and general participation.
At ES 2021, BMW presented the Joytopia Metaverse experience with the BMW iX1 virtual themed Metaverse, which featured MR wearables by NReal and personalized avatars from BMW Singapore.
In January 2022, BMW dropped the Museum of Sound NFTs. This collection of 19 NFTs was created by Serviceplan Middle East with the participation of multiple owners of BMW M Series automobiles, who recorded the sounds of their M-Series engines. The recordings were then transformed into NFTs by running the audio files through a sound visualizer.
In December 2022, BMW began filing NFT and Metaverse trademark applications in the US. This included trademarks for virtual cars, toys, clothing and headgear as well as for virtual worlds, simulations and related hardware.
Also in December 2022, BMW launched a new blockchain-based loyalty program in Thailand, with a key difference from BMW Points: this program expanded the blockchain applications to include automated financing through the development of a smart contracts platform fro Coinweb. The long-term goal for the program is global expansion, building on the decentralized structure provided by Coinweb and BNB Smart Chain.
