Taco Bell Files Trademark To Launch Virtual Restaurants In The Metaverse
Milestone Date: March 25, 2022
Following a trend of fast-food restaurants that are filing for a variety of Web3 trademarks, Taco Bell has filed trademark applications to use its name and logo with its NFT and metaverse initiatives.
The filing hints at initiatives regarding NFTs and the metaverse, including:
- Virtual foods and drinks
- NFTs and NFT-backed multimedia
- Online stores featuring virtual goods
- Virtual restaurants with “actual and virtual goods”
Metaverse trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis shared the filing news on Twitter. However, unlike other Web3 trademark applications that typically come before a company launches anything with distributed ledger technology (DLT), Taco Bell (a subsidiary of Yum! Brands) used the Ethereum public ledger and Rarible’s NFT marketplace to launch some NFTs first in March 2021, and then, one year later, returned to the scene with this trademark application.
Other fast-food restaurants, like Chick-fil-A, KFC, and Pizza Hut (the latter two of which are Taco Bell's sister chains at Yum! Brands) have also filed for Web3-related trademarks.
