AccuWeather Brings Weather Data To The Blockchain Applications
Milestone Date: June 1, 2022
AccuWeather, one of the world’s most trusted sources for weather updates, is joining the ranks of oracles that bring their data – in this case, weather data – to blockchain via an API that it’s making available with the help of API3.
API3 is an aggregator of first-party blockchain oracles that, in the spirit of the “d” in “dApps” (for “decentralized”), abstracts access to oracles with Web3-compatible dAPIs. By offering this so-called dAPI, other Web3 application and API providers can incorporate AccuWeather’s data into their offerings. When the dAPI eventually launches, it will provide weather forecasts and warning data to decentralized applications (dApps) using its Airnode solution which, according to API3’s website, is “open-source, crypto-free Web3 middleware that connects any web API directly to any blockchain application.”
"The application and use of AccuWeather's weather data, leveraged independently on an API oracle, has the potential to make lasting impacts through a range of industries and even in emerging markets," said AccuWeather senior vice president of Business Development, Paul Lentz. "As one of the first major weather data and forecast providers to enter the blockchain space, we have a unique view into the demand and usage of the marketplace, which puts us on a strong footing as we explore new opportunities for growth and how we can better serve users."
As far as we at Blockchain Journal know, this is the first time weather forecasting is crossing paths with blockchain.
